University of Havana Law School Students 1915

This photograph, taken in 1915, shows a group of law students from the old University of Havana originally founded on January 5, 1728 by the Dominican order. Gustavo Gutiérrez is in the front row of  four standing students. He's first from the right. Other students are Berny Latour, Evelio Pina, Edelberto Ebra, Enrique Llansó, C. Machado, Antonio Berenguer, Jose Sabi, ?, Ricardo Ponce de la Torre, Carlos Jimenez de la Torre, T. Silverio, R. A. Maruri, Secundino Baños, Miguel Santa Cruz, J. Garcia Bayeliares, ?, Gustavo Ramirez Olivella, C. Blanco, Oscar Campos, Jose de Castro y Mauri, J. Jimenez Balamiro. These names were written by hand on the back side of the photograph and some of the last names were not legible. I did my best. The photograph was dedicated to Gustavo by a friend "affectionately" in 1953. His signature is illegible.

This photograph was taken at the entrance of the old University of Havana, not the present day University which was built later during the administration of Gerardo Machado inaugurated December 1927.

Great photo. Can you tell from the way the names are listed which one in the photo is Secundino Baños? He's my great grandfather. I've got other photos of him, but I'm having trouble picking him out of the crowd.

The list is on the back of the photo. Send me you e-mail and I'll forward it to you. But it's just a list and not in any order. But I'm not sure. I could be wrong. How did find this blog? ANd him? Also, who is your relative? I'll ask my mother and see if she knows anything about your great grand father. MAybe our families know one another.
Thanks, Gustavo

Actually, almost as soon as I posted that, I realized that it must be my grandfather (also named Secundino Baños) because of the date, and I'm pretty sure thats him all the way on the right, second row from the front. His father (Secundino Baños Vilar) was a very prominent lawyer and president of El Centro Gallego. I found the blog just Googling his name (I find new things about him that way). My email is jbanos1 at mac dot com. Email me and I'll send you more info.

Great picture! Thanks for sharing it!
The group picture was taken on the "Loma de la Pirotectnia" where now is located the Universidad de La Habana; The old Universidad de La Habana was located in Havana Vieja, the building was demolished in the earlies 1950's and occupied by a square-like building that could serve as heliport; now the ministry of Education occupied that building

Great photo. I believe my grandfather Frank (Francisco) Carrillo graduated about 10 years later from the law school. Do you know where I could find any data on the law school/students of the time
